Dear New Graduate Student,
The Cornell Statistical Consulting Unit (CSCU) congratulates you on your acceptance to the Cornell graduate school and welcomes you on this new endeavor!
This page is meant to inform you about how CSCU can assist you with your research at Cornell. CSCU provides statistical expertise to researchers across the entire Cornell community through statistical consulting, teaching, and contract statistical analysis services. Our unit is composed of professional staff statisticians and faculty from the Department of Statistics and Data Science. The following services, which are currently offered virtually via Zoom, may be especially useful in assisting you with your research:
- Statistical consulting: CSCU can assist you with the statistical methods section of grant proposals, design of experiments and surveys, planning and implementation of statistical analyses, and interpretation and reporting of the results, among many other things. Our statistical consulting services are available to postdocs and graduate students that are housed in departments that financially support CSCU. To schedule an appointment with a member from our unit, please fill out our appointment form.
- Workshops: Every semester CSCU teaches a series of workshops on statistical methods, ranging from basic data analysis techniques to the latest and most advanced methods used in applied statistics. All workshops are free and open to members of the Cornell community. To see and register for the workshops offered this fall, you can visit our workshop schedule page.
If your research will have a quantitative component, you will likely take statistics courses during your first years at Cornell. With the essential background that coursework in statistics provides, CSCU can facilitate a practical learning experience by helping researchers overcome unique challenges found in their own data. If you need to analyze data right away without having much prior experience, you might consider taking one or more workshops on basic statistical knowledge and skills offered by CSCU. There is a lecture titled “Basic Data and Research Skills” and two hands-on workshops titled “Introductory Statistical Analysis with a Menu-Based Software” and “Introductory Statistical Analysis Using R” that will introduce researchers to basic research methods and skills.
If you are working (or plan to work) with quantitative data, remember to keep CSCU in mind to help you improve your quantitative research. Always feel free to make an appointment with us or simply drop by our daily walk-in hours to discuss your questions, whether seemingly simple or overtly complex. If you have any questions about the services we offer, you can reach us by email at email@example.com.
Best wishes and we look forward to working with you,
The CSCU Team
